The history of agriculture is rich in the valley that surrounds Crab Creek and Little River. Miles of flat and fertile land stretch and curve around the topography of the mountains. In 2014, Justin and Paige settled on this land and started selling at the Transylvania Farmers Market and marketing through a Community Supported Agriculture program. In 2017, the couple purchased additional land adjoining their current parcel to bring nearly double the acreage into production.
The farmers' goals are to continue to enrich the health of the land while harvesting nutritious seasonal produce. Rotating crops, cover cropping, and amending with organic fertilizers and composts they are able to effectively control disease and pest issues as well as increase land productivity.
Pitch Pine Farm is USDA certified organic, certified by CCOF. While Paige and Justin would always grow organic with or without the certification, they find that this standard allows for better transparency and customer trust. The process is stringent and requires intensive record keeping and management to pass the inspection and application process.
