With 20+ combined years of organic farming under our belts, we are overly joyed to find such a beautiful spot to continue our growth. Learning and working on farms across the country we have cultivated an understanding of efficient and sustainable growing practices.
Paige and Justin met at Clemson University - she graduated with a Biosystems Engineering degree and he graduated with a Computer Science degree. The both love the outdoors and frequented Pisgah National Forest and Western North Carolina. In college, Paige found employment at the student run farm and knew that farming was in her future. Justin grew up in a farming community and was eager to get back to the soil.
After graduating, both Paige and Justin apprenticed then assistant managed a farm in the Hudson Valley in New York, Sisters Hill Farm. Here they learned solid and efficient growing techniques from one of the best growers around.
After learning the ropes and successful farm management, the two moved to rural Georgia and started a farm at the new urbanist development Serenbe in 2005. The job was to take the fledgling organic Serenbe Farms from the current consultant and make it blossom. The farm posed a monstrous challenge: red clay soils, slopes, and very limited infrastructure. From the land they increased the harvests from a few thousand lbs of produce yearly to over 80,000 lbs on the 4 acre plot. Significant improvements were seen in the soil organic matter, profitability, infrastructure, and quality and quantity of produce.
Struggles of young farmers are often the same -- capital, land access, and markets. Fortunately after years of searching for our ideal piece of land we happened to be in the right place at the right time and found this perfect spot in the Little River Valley just miles from both hungry customers and our favorite trails and recreation opportunities.
In May of 2014 we hit the ground running. And with countless projects and tons of work, we are proud of our progress. We are continually learning and creating and improving systems for our small scale production. In the past several seasons, we have successfully grown over 200,000 lbs of organic produce - each year topping the last.
Every day we are amazed and grateful for the wonderful people around here, the incredible mountains and adventures they provide, and, of course, our luscious soils.
